“The Extreme 40 is capable of reaching speeds of 40 knots. It's like putting your head out of the window in a car when it is raining at 45mph. The generous sail area allows the Extreme 40s to sail faster than the wind. The sails are designed and are adjusted by the crew to harness this wind and use it to increase the boat’s speed.”
In 2014, the Extreme Sailing Series™ will embark on its most ambitious world tour since the event was launched in 2007 – eight worldwide venues marking the fourth year of truly global competition for the circuit first launched as a European only event in 2007.
The boats, 40 foot catamarans built by TornadoSport., are capable of speeds usually associated with motorboats even in medium wind conditions and the racing format means that there are upto 8 15-20 minute races per day at each of the 8 venues across 3 continents.
Retaining the same successful format as previous years, racing will take place over four days: one day of open water racing followed by three days of Stadium Racing open to public and VIP guests. The free public Race Village in each venue will continue to expand the on land entertainment experience, while sailing fans around the world will be able to watch the Stadium Racing as it happens on the online live video stream enhanced by SAP analytics and including expert commentary from each venue.
