Inmarsat to return as Volvo Ocean Race partner
The Volvo Ocean Race has announced that Inmarsat will return as its official global satellite communications partner for its 2017/18 edition.
Inmarsat's fleet of satellites will provide competitors in the round-the-world race with the company's FleetBroadband service, providing an 'always on' internet connection, and supplying crucial safety, tracking and communications services. As well as the Inmarsat C safety and tracking system, all boats will carry an IsatPhone 2 satellite phone in their life-raft packs.
The race will be Inmarsat's fifth consecutive collaboration with the Volvo Ocean Race, dating back to its 2005/06 edition, and will see Inmarsat work more closely than ever with the race organisers. One key upshot will be the ability of sailors to share their stories and photos live with the world via social media during every leg of the race for the first time.
“The 2017/18 edition of the Volvo Ocean Race will take the fleet through some of the most remote regions of the planet, so maintaining constant communication is critical," said Mark Turner, the chief executive of the Volvo Ocean Race.
“We’re delighted that Inmarsat will once again supply the network and services to power multimedia reporting from the boats throughout the race, as well as the maritime safety systems to ensure we can track the boats across the world’s oceans, from where they will offer live video and audio communications, plus, for the first time, social media interaction."
